The 7 Levels,Stages,Steps or Classes of the Categories, Functions & Judgement.

The 7 Categories of Man

#7 Superman ?
#6 Objective Conscious Man.
#5 Self Conscious Man.
#4 Self Study School Man?
#3 Intellectual Man.
#2 Emotional Man.
#1 Physical Man.

#1 Physical Man has Mechanical #1 and Sensory #2 levels of Judgement.So, the 3rd level of Judgment belongs to the 2nd category of Man,the Emotional Man.etc. Ouspensky gives no name for Man #4 & Man #7 . I added these names and used his terms

There is 4 classes of the Instinctive Function.
1. Physiology.
2. Senses.
3. Physical Emotions pleasant or unpleasant sensations.
4. Reflexes.

They are also called inner work.

The Moving Function or outer work are all learned and require attention (e.g., walking).

Physical Man is limited to these two functions. Ohsawa calls them mechanical, instinctual or unconscious reflexes and sensory, conditional reflexes or techniques (e.g., dance & gymnastics).

Ohsawa's Sentimental or Emotional #3 J. & Intellectual or Conceptual #4 J. are obvious. These 4 Functions all have positive and also negative aspects. They are located in centers and each center is further divided into:
1.Mechanical
2.Emotional
3.Intellectual

So each center is divided into 6 parts. The sexual function is related to social level judgment and seeking esoteric schools. Knowing who you are and the Order of the Universe are the goals of Ideological Judgement. Supreme Judgment is for Superman & Superwoman.

Besides the 7 levels of Judgment G.O also mentions 7 levels, stages or steps of learning (love, profession, eating & drinking) in his Classification of The Origin of Man's Thoughts and Actions. Elsewhere he lists 7 levels of health ,medicine, speech & creation. In his levels of learning, he places science & art on the 4th step. Philosophy & religion he puts on the 6th. G & O say there is 7 levels of religion, science & art. They also list 7 planes of the cosmos.

Gurjjieff studied with Yogis and Sufis and he may have got his system from them. Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri in "The Holy Science" writes the 7 stages of creation and the 7 chakras. The Holy Bible has 7 spirits of God and 7 heavens etc.

Ouspensky was influenced by R.M.Bucke's book Cosmic Consciousness. So was Walter Russell. Ed Carpenter had used the term, it is another name for Supreme Judgment.

Man is a machine and can know it. The Human Machine has 7 different functions.

Know the machine to stop being a machine. Our understanding, consciousness & being is not always on the same level. It is always moving up or down. (G & O)

Man #1, #2 & #3, constitute mechanical humanity. They are still on the same level they were born on & haven’t been to school. Man #1 Physical, (Instinctive & moving functions ) , #2 Emotional (feeling function) and #3 Intellectual (thinking the 4th function).

Compare this to Ohsawa’s writings. "The first four stages of evolution are egocentric."

#4. Conceptual is Intellectual, or the thinking function.

All our behavior depends on judgment.

#1 Level of Judgment. Physical, Mechanical, Simple, Blind. Physical reaction to heat & cold etc. a few hours after birth. ( P.G.) etc.

#1 Level of Learning & Knowledge. Instinctive or Unconscious Reflexes. No Understanding.

#1 Level of Love. Mikareu = Instinctual, appetite, hunger, thirst, no discretion. Sexual love, pleasure.

#1 Level of profession One who sells his life. Working slave, salaried employee, Laborer. #1 Level of Diet Guided only by thirst and hunger.

Those of the first step of judgment make chaotic noises when they express themselves. They understand nothing. (G.O.)

Instinctive Function = Inherent Inner Work. (A) All Physiology. e.g. Blood Circulation. (B) The 5 Senses. Hot & Cold, Dry & Wet. (C) Physical Emotions .Pleasant or Not. (D) Reflexes. Inner. Physical memories. Outer. e.g. Yawning etc.

Instinctive Center. 1.Mechanical Part. Habitual sensations Instinctive movements, all reflexes. 2. Emotional Part. Interest + Boredom -. 3. Intellectual Part. The mind behind the work of the organism. (G&O)

KNOWLEDGE & LEARNING Conditioned Reflexes, Techniques, Gymnastics, Dance.

LOVE Koi or Suki ,Physical or Physiological, Erotic, Seeking Comfort or Sensual Pleasure. Sensory Love or Sensuality, which seeks Satisfaction & Pleasure.

PROFESSION Wholesaler of Pleasure, e.g., Merchant, Actor, Novelist, Prostitute.

DIET Gourmand or Greedy Eater.

MEDICINE Preventative or Prophylactic.

HEALTH Good appetite for Food & Sex.

"A few days after birth the baby develops sensory perception such as light & dark hunger & sufferings, color, shape, taste, smell, sound, and temperature appear. They are divided into Yin & Yang." (P.G) "After some days the sensorial judgment begins to function and to perceive cold & warmth, the 2 poles of our relative world. CATEGORY # 1 PHYSICAL MAN The Instinctive & moving functions operate for Physical Man who learns like a parrot or monkey his knowledge is based on imitation & is learned by heart, crammed or drilled into the man .The being of Man #1 the man of the physical body is the being of a man living by his instincts & sensations

SENTIMENTAL JUDGEMENT #3

HEALTH Deep & Good Sleep. Only true dreams.

Feeling Function of the Emotional Center. (Joy, Hope, Faith, Love + or - Sorrow, Grief, Fear & Hate.)

Mechanical Part: Physical Cheep humor & comedy, pageantry, shows, excitement, being in, crowds, selfishness, sentimentality, envy, apprehension, coward, Lover of Sports.(Moving & Instinctual)

Emotional Part: Sentimental Feelings. Religious, aesthetic, moral humor, comedy, tragedy, ironic, sarcastic, derisive, jealous, obstinate, cruel, (No + or -)

Intellectual Part: Rational Thinking. Artistic creativity, dreams, self confidence.

The Sentimental level of Being Category #2 The Emotional Man The Man of Feeling is Man #2.
