February 10- The German SS General von Steuben is sunk by a Soviet submarine while returning to Kiel with wounded. Between 3 & 4 thousand perished.
March 7- American troops seize the bridge over the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany and begin to cross.
April 7- Japanese super-battleship Yamato is sunk 200 miles north of Okinawa.
April 24- Retreating German troops destroy all the bridges over the Adige in Verona, including the historical Ponte di Castelvecchio (built in the 14th Century) and Ponte Pietra ("Stonebridge" - completed in 100BC).
April 25- United States and Soviet troops link up at the Elbe River, cutting Germany in two.
