March 17 & 18- "St. Patrick's Day Flood" - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, suffered the worst flooding in its history.
April 5- A tornado hits Tupelo, Mississippi killing 216 and injuring over 700. It is the 4th deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
April 6- Two tornadoes strike Gainesville, Georgia. The 5th deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
May 14- Universal Pictures' new film version of Show Boat, an adaptation of the stage musical, premieres at Radio City Music Hall.
May 27- RMS Queen Mary leaves Southampton on her maiden voyage over the Atlantic.
July 13 & 14 - Peak of July 1936 heat wave. The northern states of Wisconsin and Michigan are among those to set new state records. 113°F (45°C) temperatures are recorded in northern Michigan.
August 1- 1936 Summer Olympics open in Berlin, Germany, and mark the first live television coverage of a sports event in world history.
September 6- The largest living marsupial (and a wolf-like carnivore), the Tasmanian Tiger becomes extinct.
November 12- The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opens.
January (1937- prior to February 4th)- The Ohio River flood begins. With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, one million were left homeless. In Cincinnati, my father & uncle rescued people from second-story windows, in their row boat. They had to cut telephone and power lines, to row down the "streets".
